Leonidas was a warrior king of Sparta, one of Greece's most dominant cities.
He was not destined to become king by birth, but only because his elder half-brother, Cleomenes, had died without a son.During his reign, King Xerxes of Persia sought to conquer all of Greece, after his father's failure.
Xerxes had built up an enormous army of around one hundred and fifty thousand men and a navy of six hundred ships.The invasion led to the Battle of Thermopylae, considered one of the most famous in ancient European history.
Unlike other battles, however, it was not a victory for the Greeks, but a defeat.
Its fame stems from the fact that the defending army led by King Leonidas of Sparta was one of the bravest and longest-lasting, despite its numerical inferiority, against the Persian invaders of King Xerxes.
